Henderson (John Glenn) Scott April 14, 1932 - September 2, 2019

The body has stopped. The spirit that animated the body has returned to its

wellspring. The soul-framed by Christian tradition and intellectual curiosity-is

accessible to those who interacted in the shaping and in the understanding of its

essence. You know who you are. You know how you loved and were loved. That

has made all the difference.

Forever in Your Corner

I had the pleasure of knowing Henderson as I worked at Belmont House for over 16 years on the Front Desk. Both Henderson and Carine came to Belmont as dedicated volunteers and then became residents. I have never met a person like Henderson, who was so caring about people of all walks of life. He always made you feel comfortable and he enjoyed talking about life and his family. I heard a lot about Parker and the farm. He was so proud!!! Thou Henderson was an extremely education man, he had a terrific sense of humour even when he used “big’ words that I didn’t understand…. but that was what made he unique. I will miss him greatly and knowing that he is up in heaven still being Henderson and still enjoying talking to everyone and making them feel at home. My sympathies to his extended family. God Bless.

I met Henderson when I was nine years old and he was a brand new elementary school teacher boarding in our home. He stayed with us for 10 years and became a member of our extended family. We have been blessed over 3 generations, by his and Cairine’s steadfast friendship and generosity. He was truly a good man and made a difference in so many lives. My sympathies to Henderson’s family, his beloved Cairine, and many friends.

My love, respect, and admiration of Henderson (formerly Glenn) was and will always be there. He was my mentor right from my arrival in Toronto (after University of Waterloo and sharing an office with Eileen in Ottawa) – she insisted that Glenn and I meet once I arrived in Toronto. We did and ever since then he has shared his beautiful, thoughtful, and caring life. And even thought his spirit has slipped out of his body, he lives on among us, and never a day will go by without his soul and spirit surrounding those who loved him and whom he loved.

I would like to give my deepest sympathy to Cairine and his family first of all. I still remember my last day of school placement at Belmont House. He brought a book of The Velveteen Rabbit and threw a small farewell party for me. He was kind to everyone and I will never forget his empathy toward me who I have been new to Canada and started a new life in a new country. He told me, ‘Never say good bye now, we will see again’. But it becomes it was the last moment I saw him so sadly.
I really regretted I didn’t meet him when I stopped by Belmont last June. I was looking for him and Cairne in the dining room but I couldn’t find and I just came out. I had to spend more time in there to find him and Cairne and to spend some time with them.
As I wrote on my first and last birthday card to him last April, his empathy and kindness toward me will be a big boost to me in the face of hardship while living my life in Canada.
Wishing him rest in peace and my deepest condolences to Cairine and the family of Dr. Scott.
He will be Missed long long time !!!

It was with great sadness that I read of Henderson’s death.
He was an intelligent, intuitive, sensitive human being with a great sense of
humour. Both he and Cairine, with whom I worked for many years at
Palmerston Ave. Jr. School, were gracious, caring people. I had planned to visit them at Belmont House after Henderson’s radiation treatments but that was, unfortunately,
not to be. He will be missed by me and countless others whose lives he touched.
My heart goes out to dear Cairine at this sad time.
    With sincere condolences,
    Sharon

When I came as a student to OISE in 1969 I remember how kind Henderson was to me. He was involved in admissions then. I have worked with OISE since then for more than 47 years yet I still have a clear image of those years and his important role at OISE. Many blessings to him and his family

It is with deepest sorrow that I received the news of Henderson’s passing just about ten days after I had talked to him on the phone. I had known Henderson for nearly five decades dating back to 1968 when I joined OISE Graduate Studies Office. Henderson (then, Glen to us) and I, along with three other colleagues, administered entire graduate studies programs. I looked up to Henderson for guidance and support that was generously came from him. Interestingly, we found ourselves living in retirement as neighbours during the last nine years. So, I also became a witness to the fortitude, courage and hope he displayed in coping with adversity.

With Henderson’s passing, my wife, Sajida, and I have lost a dear friend for guidance and wise counsel. I always admired Henderson for his intellect, depth of understanding, and leadership qualities during his professional career. In his personal life, Henderson was a man of fine tastes who displayed passion for the arts and the stage, in particular. He was also imbued with the spirit of volunteerism and sacrifice that knew no bounds throughout his life.

Sajida and I express our deepest condolences to Cairine and Henderson’s other family members. We wish to let them know that Henderson was a beacon of light for us and that he will be sorely missed.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

I first met Henderson Fifty years ago at Ottawa Normal School. Fifty years later our paths crossed again when he took on the humongous task of organizing ou 50th anniversary. The effort he put in to make this a very special reunion was amazing. In the next ten years many of us would still meet some place in the valley to once again renew our friendship . That was when we first met his beautiful Corrine.
Henderson was such an amazing man, intelligent, kind, gentle, loving. Thank you Glen for being in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with you Corrine.

    I am Cairine’s first cousin(our mothers were sisters) .
Cairine & Glenn(Henderson)have played an integral part in my life, especially having had the honour of
being part of their wedding party 18Aug62, 57 years ago!!
I had spoken to Henderson just a couple of weeks before his passing.
    I loved him to pieces!
Cairine remains in my thoughts and prayers knowing that she is content and well cared for.
I was sorry not to be able to join the Family this day in South Mountain.
It was touch and go ,but I have been going through a difficult journey having recently lost my husband, and just didn’t feel up to the task.
I must extend my sympathy esp. to Jean Lewis,Henderson’s Sister.Although it has been years since we met,I have thought of you and Dale often.
In closing would have so enjoyed meeting Henderson’s Family.
He was so proud of his heritage.

    Fondly,
    Ruth Hammond
