What are the different types of funeral services available?

Whether you decide on a burial or cremation, there are many meaningful ways to honour and celebrate your loved one. Below are some of the most common options for funeral services and events.

  • Traditional Funeral: A traditional funeral service typically includes two periods of visitation (often referred to as a wake) followed by a funeral service the next day. The visitation and service can take place with either a casket or an urn present. After the funeral service, there is often a short graveside committal service, which occurs just before the burial. Many families choose to gather for a reception or luncheon afterward.
  • Memorial Service: Similar to a traditional funeral, a memorial service includes a period of visitation followed by a chapel service. The key difference is that a memorial service usually has only one visitation period, which immediately precedes the service. A graveside service may or may not follow, and families often host a reception or luncheon afterward. A memorial service may be held with either a casket or urn present.
  • Celebration of Life: A celebration of life is typically less formal than a traditional funeral or memorial service. Family and friends share stories and memories of their loved one. Light refreshments, tea, and coffee are commonly served during this event.
  • Graveside Service: While often included in a traditional funeral, a graveside service can also stand alone. As the name suggests, this service takes place at the graveside. It is a popular choice for those seeking something private and intimate, as there is often no visitation beforehand.

Choosing the right service can feel overwhelming. Our compassionate team at Byers Funeral Home is here to help you navigate these options and create a meaningful tribute to your loved one. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for support and guidance.

What is involved in preplanning a funeral?

Pre-planning your funeral is a meaningful way to ease the burden on your loved ones. It reduces stress at a difficult time and ensures your final wishes are respected.

The process involves:

  • Recording Your Wishes: Document your preferences for burial or cremation and the type of traditional, memorial, or celebration of life services you wish for.
  • Exploring Options: Learn about the services available to help you make decisions that align with your values and budget.
  • Providing Personal Details: Share vital information (e.g., date of birth, birthplace, parent’s names, their birthplaces, occupation, SIN# optional), needed for death registration.
  • Considering Prepayment: Lock in today’s prices and ease the financial burden on your loved ones.

** Please make your family aware of your wishes **

Our dedicated team at Byers Funeral Home will guide you through each step with care and understanding. Contact us today to begin planning.

What should I do immediately after the loss of a loved one?

Experiencing the death of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult moments. In those early hours, it’s natural to feel uncertain about what comes next. The steps you take will depend on where and how the death occurs:

If the death occurs at home:

  • Notify the attending nurse, physician, or care staff. They will confirm the passing and guide you on the next official steps.
  • Once the death is verified, you may contact Byers Funeral Home. We will arrange to bring your loved one into our care with dignity and respect.

If the death is unexpected:

  • Call 911. Emergency personnel and possibly a coroner will be involved to confirm the death and ensure there are no unusual circumstances.

Once we are contacted, we will guide you through the next steps:

  • Coordinating transport of your loved one
  • Collecting the information required for vital records and death registration
  • Beginning the process of planning a meaningful tribute

You do not need to go through this alone. Our compassionate staff will help you at your own pace, with sensitivity to your emotional and practical needs.
If you’ve experienced a loss, please reach out to us—we are here to help.

What happens if my spouse or travel companion dies while we are away from home?

This is a question that comes up more often than you might think. Death while away from home—whether in another province or another country—brings unique challenges. Each situation is different, but here’s what you can expect:

Out of Province (within Canada)

  • A local funeral home will need to be contacted first.
  • Necessary documentation (death certificate, proofs of death, permits for transportation) must be completed before your loved one can be returned. Embalming may be required.
  • Transportation costs can vary widely, depending on location and distance.

Out of Country

  • Regulations vary by country, and additional documentation (including translations, permits, proofs of death and consular support) may be required.
  • Costs can be very high, often reaching thousands of dollars.
  • Delays may occur due to local laws and regulations.
  • Cremation may be an option but it can also be costly abroad.

In both cases, families are often left with unexpected bills, complicated paperwork, and added stress during an already emotional time.

If you or your family members travel regularly, we encourage you to ask us about enrolling in the Guaranteed Travel Assurance Plan. With one simple step, you can remove worry about the unknown and focus on what matters most: enjoying life and your journeys with peace of mind. Call us at 613-989-3836 or visit us in person to discuss the plan and enrollment.
